Quick sketch of how I think a 5 column grid would work for the book cover. In the end after a fair bit of fiddling about in Indesign I came up with two grids, a seven column grid for short titles and an eight column grid for titles that ran over into two lines. By inputting the longest book title, author etc it gave me the width of the columns so I knew that however long or short any type of word or title was it would fit.
The colour used here is initially just a fill colour to get an idea of how things would eventually look. Initially I thought it would be a change to put the bar code on the front cover however having been pointed out in my crit, it takes your eye away from the title and surrounding pattern. Maybe thats the reason why it is more often than not featured on the back of anything that requires a bar code.
Back cover. I thought it would make things simple and introduce some continuity if I kept the same grid as the front cover (minus 5 columns). I was torn as to weather I should keep the horizontal theme or switch the summery text back to a more familiar vertical position. I tried it both ways but thought it would be best not only for practicality but also for user interaction that it was positioned horizontally. In doing this I had to reduce the font size to around 10/11 pt and be selective in the amount of information featured on the back cover, eg removing reviews, quotes etc..
